Excitement is building as the Lyca Super T20 gears up to bowl off from September 23rd to 29th, 2025, at the iconic Lugogo Cricket Oval, promising a thrilling week of women's cricket that will captivate fans across Uganda and beyond.
Following the Victoria Pearls’ fourth-place finish at the recently concluded ICC Women’s Africa Division One Qualifiers in Namibia, the High-Performance Team moved swiftly to introduce this tournament as a strategic response.
According to Richard Okia, Head of high perfomance at Cricket Uganda, the aim of this tournament is to maintain competitive momentum and provide a platform to assess and nurture emerging talent ahead of future international engagements.
The Lyca Super T20 brings together a dynamic and diverse mix of players. It will feature national team regulars, former U-19 players, and members of the U-19 girls’ squad who were recently in camp in Jinja.
However, some players will unfortunately miss out on this opportunity due to academic commitments, as several are in candidate classes and preparing for important exams.
This highlights the balancing act many young athletes face between sport and education.
The four participating teams—Itanda Kayakers, Sipi Trekkers, Karuma Rapids, and Bujjagali Rafters—have been drawn to showcase a blend of youth and experience.
The recently unveiled squads reflect the competitive spirit of the tournament, with experienced names returning to action alongside emerging prospects ready to make their mark.
Leadership will be a focal point on and off the field. Janet Mbabazi, captain of the Victoria Pearls, will lead Sipi Trekkers.
Kevin Awino will captain Karuma Rapids, Esther Iloku takes charge of the Bujjagali Rafters, and Rita Musamali will guide the Itanda Kayakers.
Each team will also benefit from an experienced coaching setup.
Former Cricket Cranes player Jonathan Ssebanja, will oversee Sipi Trekkers.
Itanda Kayakers will be under the guidance of Robinison Turinawe, formerly the assistant coach for the Baby Cricket Cranes.
Bujjagali Rafters will draw from the expertise of Shakira Sadick, who is a former Victoria Pearls player and recently attained her Level 2 coaching certification in Namibia.
Meanwhile, Karuma Rapids will be led by Baraka Turyamwesimira, head coach at St. John’s SS.
The tournament officially gets underway tomorrow, September 23rd, with an exciting double-header.
The opening match will see Bujjagali Rafters face off against Karuma Rapids in the morning, followed by an afternoon clash between Sipi Trekkers and Itanda Kayakers.
All matches will be hosted live at Lugogo Cricket Oval, which is expected to be buzzing with energy and anticipation.
The competition format will see the four teams play a double round-robin stage.
The top-ranked team at the end of the group phase will secure a direct spot in the final, while the second and third-placed teams will battle it out in an eliminator for the remaining place in the championship match.
Although the team names and structure may remind fans of the 2023 Women’s Waterfalls Elite League, the Lyca Super T20 is a completely new tournament, marking its inaugural edition.
With elite players, strategic innovation, and a strong development focus, the Lyca Super T20 is set to become a cornerstone in the growth of women’s cricket in Uganda.
