QUICK POINTERS

1.     There was a change in the format of play from Twenty20 to Limited Overs (40 over) format and also a new captain for Team Uganda.

2.    With captain Roger Mukasa getting some rest alongside senior players Deus Muhumuza, Charles Waiswa and Emmanuel Isaneez, coach Steve Tikolo opted to give all the U-19 players on the touring side a run out in the middle.

3.     Brian Masaba got another chance to have a bite at cherry as skipper following a couple of previous stints over the last five years.

4.     It was a day of mixed fortunes for top order batsman Hamu Kayondo and young wicket-keeper Fred Achelam – the only players yet to sit out any match since the tour started in Doha on February 8.

5.     Kayondo didn’t trouble the scoreboard for the second successive day whereas Achelam (31 off 48) played out a gem of a knock to rescue Uganda’s innings from 46 for 5 before he departed at 122 for 7 after 23.1 overs.

6.      Achelam wasn’t a one-man army as the game changed favour to swing Uganda’s way. The day’s captain Masaba (31 off 52) equally stood up to the task as the pair grit their teeth for 71 runs off 93 balls for the sixth-wicket.

7.     But the star of the show was Kenneth Waiswa, who snapped up his first Man of the Match (MOM) Award for the Tour. Always elevated as the next Kenneth Kamyuka, the U-19 captain walked in at No.9 and took control of the game.

8.     Waiswa was in the thick of the action from 122 for 7 to the end including a 15-run winning-partnership with last man Trevor Bukenya as Uganda crossed the finishing line with 28 balls to remaining.

9.     The captain of the Surat U-19 side Vadant Jani (23 & 4 for 48), a youngster who has played at the level just below State Cricket here in India, wowed with his batting technique and leg-spinners that turned devilishly. Opening batsman Zarath Batporia (15 runs off 42 balls), opening bowler Nayan Khalesi (3 wickets for 33 runs in 6.2 overs) and left-arm orthodox spinner Sudhir Sharma, who bowled a spell of 0 for 18 in 7 overs including two maidens, left a mark on the fair crowd that turned up at the oval and more importantly goose bumps on many in the Ugandan dug-out for their spirited displays irrespective of their slim physical appearances.

10.  Both Uganda and Surat C.A U-19 bowled 36 extras apiece hence turning the match into a game of fine margins as justified by Uganda’s one-wicket win.
