JINJA. The Cricket Cranes, Uganda’s national cricket team, are set to face Bahrain in an exciting three-match series starting tomorrow at Jinja Senior Secondary School Oval. This tour features two T20 Internationals, with global ranking points on the line, and will culminate in a 50-over game on October 31. This tour serves as crucial preparation as Uganda will host the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League (CWCCL) B from November 4 to 16 at Lugogo and Entebbe.
The Cricket Cranes have been based in Jinja since October 22, where they’ve engaged in a rigorous training regimen that includes in-house trial matches, gym sessions at Hared Health Club, swimming drills at Jinja Club, and intensive nets sessions at Jinja SS Oval.
Head Coach Abhay Sharma is expected to rotate players throughout the series, possibly incorporating Uganda ‘A’ players, as he finalizes the upcoming CWCCL B tournament roster.
“Our camp in Jinja has been instrumental in building momentum,” Sharma stated during yesterday's team’s practice session. “This series is about preparing every player for the role they’ll play in the Challenge League, ensuring everyone is sharp and ready to contribute.”
Assistant coach Jackson Ogwang and High-Performance Consultant Craig Williams bring tactical expertise, with fitness specialist Emmanuela Oroma and physiotherapist Ghalena Udaka ensuring peak player condition. This support staff is integral to the team’s form, from maintaining physical conditioning to delivering precise recovery plans.
Williams emphasized a strategy of controlled play. “The batters must stay compact, prioritize singles, and look for boundaries only when they’re on offer,” said Williams.
The T20I matches will provide a competitive testing ground for sides with the 50-over match providing a sneak peek into what lies in store when the Challenge League B bowls off November 6.
