The choices we make in life make or break us, they often say so. Lady Cricket Cranes all-rounder Franklyn Najjumba can now relax after her decision to leave National Women’s 50-Over League champions Pioneer for Jinja Secondary School.
It certainly feels right after the 28-year-old spurred Jinja SS to the National Women’s Sixes Cup title on her first day in business at Lugogo Oval on Saturday.
“I am so excited playing with the girls,” Najjumba told Daily Monitor after the five-wicket win over Tornado Bee. “And the fact that we have won our first trophy of the season, this is a perfect start here.”
Najjumba’s right-arm medium-fast deliveries earned her figures of 2/4 in her five-ball spell and together with Stephannie Nampiina (2/2) they bowled out Tornado Bee for 35 runs in 4.5 overs.
Skipper Naome Kayondo top-scored with 10 off 13 balls. The target for coach Habibu Mugalula’s side was within reach and revenge for defeat in last year’s Sixes Cup final was imminent.
Dinah Adong sealed the job with a 16-ball 15-run knock to add to the club’s 2014 Twenty20 title.
Prior, both sides had played in the 50-Over League season opener that had gone Tornado Bee’s way.
“The girls have been used to the Twenty20 format but with time we, shall catch up,” Najjumba said.
Here, Tornado Bee majorly relied on the chemistry between their openers Rashida Kalsum (43 off 82) and Saidat Kemigisha (24 off 22).
The pair built a firm foundation and despite Nampiina (4/19) and Rita Musamali’s (3/42) resistance, they coasted 147 in 37 overs.

There is always a prize for good deed. Beyond the certificates and diadems, the best players selected from last month’s Pepsi Girls’ Schools Cricket Week will represent Uganda at the annual Kwibuka Peace Women’s tourney this weekend.
A team of 16 departed yesterday for Kigali by road where they will play six round-robin matches against Kenya and Rwanda national sides.
“This is another bigger opportunity for the girls to express themselves,” said Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) CEO Justine Ligyalingi during the flag-off at Lugogo yesterday.
Girls’ Cricket Week champions Jinja Secondary School have been rewarded with three slots on the team plus their coach Habibu Mugalula.
“Much as I have my own girls here, this is a chance to closely look and groom more players from other schools,” noted Mugalula, who has nurtured several female players.
None of Mugalula’s students Stephannie Nampiina, Kevin Awino and Ritah Musamali will captain the side. That job is for Mugalula’s former prodidy Racheal Ntono.
Clearly, this is a reward for Ntono, who single handedly lifted St. James SS to their first-ever final with a respectable 45-ball 61* despite losing to Jinja SS by 14 runs on May 10.
“I am delighted with this position,” Ntono said after receiving the flag from National Council of Sports (NCS) assistant general secretary David Katende. “We shall deliver in Rwanda.” The tourney ends June 15.

One game was done before lunch in Kyambogo. Then ACC got 165 thanks to a swashbuckling 19-ball 52 from Robert Okot but it was Aziz Damani, who without having to bat, that were awarded victory at the King’s College Budo Oval.
ACC’s crime? They took to the field for the second innings with less than nine players in matching jerseys.
In Lugogo, relegation-threatened Tornado almost pulled off a heist chasing 260 for victory against Patidar Samaj but bad-light put paid to any of their hopes.
Such was the intensity with which all games were played on Sunday, cricket lovers were left wishing they could catch all of the National Men’s Cricket League action.
Henry Ssenyondo single-handedly ensured that Challengers (48) remain atop the table with at least a 10-point cushion. The left-arm orthodox spinner prized out eight wickets as Wanderers collapsed for 73 runs.
Arthur Kyobe (35 off 24) and Mohammed Aneef (29 off 20) were unbeaten and brutal in the chase as Challengers sealed their eighth win of the season at Kyambogo.
At Lugogo, John Gabula (87 off 113) and Richard Okia (41 off 59) almost made Patidar pay for their clumsy fielding in the chase of 260 and the latter will have the umpires (Grace Mutyagaba and Michael Okoth) to thank for having extended time of play and forthwith helping them over the victory tape.
But the mother-of-all clashes was at the lakeside oval in Entebbe where a tense but low-scoring spectacle was played out between title hopefuls Nile and defending champions Tornado Bee. “We were lucky not to lose,” said Tornado Bee skipper Jeremy Kibuukamusoke. “We still have a game in hand but more work to do.”
Due to the closure of Kampala-Entebbe highway, Nile and, umpires Paul Okecho and James Bamulese arrived late. The morning showers further reduced the game to 33 overs. Simon Ayella (2/11) and Ivan Kakande (3/18) restricted Tornado Bee to 91 runs in 29.5 overs. Nile batsmen, too, caved in to Deus Muhumuza (2/5), Roger Mukasa (2/19) and Davis Karashani (3/18) but their captain David Musoke (40 off 88) stayed firm.
He stuck in with last man Alvin Bagaya, needing five runs to win off Charles Waiswa’s (2/21) final over. Musoke flicked Waiswa to tie but Waiswa got Musoke caught behind, two balls later, for a fascinating tie.

ABC Samurais fresh of a resounding win over the Lakhani motors titans won the toss and elected to bat in their second game of the Generation Next Season 2 Challenge at Lugogo Cricket Oval. A wise decision it turned out as the opening pair of Abdallah Isaac and Brian Adriko batted Knights out of the equation early on eventually piling on an insurmountable total and winning the tie by 61 runs.
Abdallah Lubega 76 (69) and Brian Adriko 22(30) batted with mettle against a probinh Knights opening bolwing partnership of Joseph Oyet and Davis Acire. The openers were careful to let the moving ball go early on judging the line outside off stump well; they put together an 82 run opening stand built on patience and poise.
Abdallah was quick between the wickets using the vacant slip region to run the ball down to third man for easy singles and open spaces between mid-wicket and square leg to drop and run with a willing partner in Brian Adriko. They took as many singles as were on offer even in the tight overs of Davis Acire; a welcome change to the “boom! Boom! Wicket!” cricket that characterized the opening day of play, maybe a sign of the realization of the task at hand.
When the opener settled in Abdallah began to find his range particularly taking a liking to Jospeh Oyet and Kainerugaba, hitting some clean sixes over mid-off and extra cover region; his 76 was punctuated with 8 boundaries and 3 sixes.
Vishnu Manepali 26(22) then joined Abdallah and put on a 2nd wicket 40 run stand which all but put the shine on a brilliant batting display; Vishnu is enjoying his second season of the GNEXT challenge finding runs easily and hoping between the wickets with all the agility of a dancer. MEET 20(16) then polished off the scoring with a quickfire 20 setting a possibly insurmountable 171.
Knights Openers Emmanuel Hasahya 08(08) and Wilfred Ogwang 02(08) found the wicket like a minefield where Samurais had sauntered through a rose garden of an innings, Agamire and Oburu quickly found them out; Davis Acire 13(30) then went about the task of rebuilding the shambolic start and he found a willing partner in Richard Opio 10(13) but Vishnu broke the partnership; form then on, wickets continued to collapse regularly without pausng any threat to the Samurais total until the arrival of Jonathan Kiiza.
Jonathan Kiiza 37 (16) took apart Abdallah’s bowling in an over he bowled from the shell end; he smoked four mighty sixes in one over getting underneath the off spin well to clear long on by a country mile. The fans went wild as the Knight innings was brought back to life, albeit briefly as he eventually chanced his arm too often and was clean bowled by Agamire.
Knights eventually capitulated to 110 runs losing the tie by 61.
ABC Samurais have clearly set the early pace and are cruising to victory after destroying their opponents without as much as number 5 having a meaningful knock. They will be a force in this edition, no doubt.
ABC SAMURAIS 171/4 in 25 overs (Abdallah Isaac 76(69), Vishnu Manepali 26(22), Hasahya Emmanuel 2/32 in 5 overs) defeated BLINK LOGISTICS KNIGHTS 110/10 in 19 overs (Jonathan Kiiza 37(16), Davis Acire 13(30), Vishnu Manepali 5/36 in 4 overs, Richard Agamire 3/15 in 5 overs) by 61 runs.

Besides Challengers being top, the other rare aspect of this year’s National Men’s Division One 50-Over League has been the degree of intensity among bottom sides.
The fortunes of the sides in the eight-team log keep changing save for 1991 and 1992 champions Wanderers. Runners-up just four years ago, Wanderers remained winless in eight games and are now as good as relegated after a 160-run loss to Nile at Lugogo Oval on Sunday.
“I think we can now begin preparing for life in the lower tier next season,” a distraught Wanderers skipper Denis Musali conceded. With just a point, Wanderers’ only mathematical chance stands at winning all their remaining six games to survive, hoping other results go their way.
“We won’t give up though,” chipped in bowling all-rounder David Mwesigwa.
For Nile, they moved out of the relegation zone to sixth on 23 points.
“Good way to begin the second round,” said opening batsman Martin Ondeko, who registered a match-winning knock of 78* off 141 balls. The former U-19 national player struck six boundaries and his 66-run first-wicket combo with Abu Seguya (30 off 37) and a 57-run third partnership with skipper David Musoke (22 off 47) formed the gist of Nile’s innings.
Zephania Arinaitwe’s 28-run-a-ball, Richard Agamire (28 off 23) and Ivan Kakande’s (27* off 10) two sixes helped them set 263 for the loss of six wickets in the allotted 50 overs.
Man-of-match Kakande’s left-arm spinners (4/12) sent Wanderers home early midway the 34th over.
While Kutchi Tigers relied on Nehal Bibodi’s 89-ball 52* to beat Tornado by in Kyambogo, third-placed KICC were left reeling after losing to Patidar Samaj by two runs in Entebbe.
Patidar captain Ankit Patel’s 36 off 56 helped them to set 123 in 29.3 overs but it is old boy Emmanuel Isaneez (4/39) whose pace blew away KICC ‘s clueless batsmen.
